Lego Mania

The boys have been working their way through their birthday presents.  Ryan put together a wolf lego a couple of weeks ago.  Since then he's been pretty lego obsessed.  It was the only toy he wanted to take on vacation.

He spent the morning building lego treasure boxes with free floating treasure in the middle that rattles when it shakes.  It was actually really cool.  It reminded me of a Japanese puzzle box.

Afterwards he built this guy.

And spent the next 3 hours trying to convince me to let him take it to school.  I told him we'd talk about it tomorrow morning and now he's sitting down writing a note to make sure I don't forget.  "How do you spell "gonna??"  and "remind!!"

This Baseball Season

This weekend's game was actually our third of the season.  Thus far we are 1-0-2.  1W, 0L, 2 Ties.  One 0-0, and one 5-5.  They actually keep score this year (unfortunately for us, as we aren't on near as good of a team as last year.)  It's also coach pitch.  From the mound.  5 pitches (3 feet over your head, bouncing on the ground - it doesn't matter). Just 5.

Connor decided not to play this year, despite multiple attempts to talk him into it.  So it's just Ryan.  Who's also playing soccer this Spring, too.

Skippy's Crack of Dawn Baseball Game

I know it's been a week since the time change.  But since we have been on vacation and getting to bed, well, whenever, and getting up later (my sincerest thank you to who ever invented blackout curtains!) we haven't really adjusted to the time change, and aren't in getting up the crack of dawn mode.

So having to be at the baseball fields BEFORE the CRACK OF DAWN for pictures BEFORE the game was rough.

Don't even get me started on how the photographer was 30 minutes late, and Ryan had already untucked his precarioulsy tucked shirt more than once, was already sporting a nice grass stain on one knee, and lovely red dirt on the hip of the other leg.

Or how it started sprinkling in the middle of the game....

Or well, anything about the coach's complete and utter lack of organization... and fairness...

All I hope is that his pants weren't pulled up like that, or that it was just a head shot.... :)

And that he continues to enjoy playing and trying to knock it out of the park every.single.time.  :)

He had an awesome hit his second time up to bat.  I was really proud of him.

Spring Break 2014

Public school has put a real damper on our travel plans.  Can't just decide to go anywhere, anytime on a moment's notice.  And vacationing with the masses at peak season in general is not my idea of a good time. But when I saw a good deal on beach front hotel in Galveston for the week the kids would be out of school I couldn't pass it up.

So we spent the better part of our Spring Break here.

Unlike most vacations where I have poured over everything there is to read on the internet about what to see and where to go and what to do, this time we went without a single plan.  Other than to eat at The Original, and a handful of other places with positive reviews.  We had to eat after all, no matter what we did.  :)

Of course the first thing the boys wanted to do when we got there was to run, not walk, as fast as humanly possible to the beach.  Despite the absolutely frigid temperature of the water, and the only slightly better air temperatures Connor couldn't resist the lure of the water.  And despite PROMISING that he wouldn't get those shorts wet, managed to get them absolutely soaked.  But only at the bottom!  :)

Ryan on the other hand had just one mission.  To find shells.  And lots of them.  Every whole in tact shell on the beach I suspect.

And so they did, until I turned into a popsicle and made them come inside.

The hotel we stayed at was just down the beach from the Pleasure Pier.  Though we walked past it heading to eat one day the boys never paid it much attention.

On the second day Connor discovered the pool and was determined to go for a swim.  The OUTDOOR pool.  And while they claim it's heated, it certainly isn't heated to my definition of heated enough to swim in the off season.  Especially when the air temperatures are in the low 60's at best and the cloud cover kept the warming rays of the sun at bay.  Not that he noticed of course.

What I really should have taken a picture of was me.  In my zipped up hoodie, and jeans, and flip flops - the only concession of pretend warm weather I was sporting.

We did indeed make it over The Original mexican restaurant one day for lunch.  Afterwards we made a quick stop at the Strand.  Despite the number of times I have been to Galveston and my affinity for shopping I have never been to the Strand before.  And other than a quick 30 minute foray where I ventured into Gracie's and then the Nestle shop next door for a peanut butter cup while the kids looked for the whole reason for our visit La Kings' Confectionary I didn't have much time to explore this trip either.  Though I will certainly be back.  I could have spent a whole hour in Gracie's alone.  Between their monogramming, soft washed Life is good collection, Vera Bradley, owl stuff, and wood signs I was in heaven.

The boys were indeed successful in locating La Kings.  We watched a man make Pina Colada taffy that he periodically threw out to people in the crowd.  And perused case after case of treats.  Connor picked a handful of flavors of Salt Water taffy as his treat, while Ryan decided on some Lemon slices.

We had hoped that while we were gone the morning fog would have burned off.  Despite the sunshine, and complete and utter lack of fog near the Strand the Seawall was still heavily shrouded.

Not that it put a damper on the boys' enthusiasm for the beach one iota.

Though they were also perfectly content to sit in the hotel room and play games on their Touchpads or Connor's DS.  Or watch Jake and the Neverland pirates on Netflix.  I think the tv in our room was in fact only turned on once during our whole visit - the next to last night - we watched the end of Casper.

One day for dinner we walked down the beach to The Spot.  After seeing the crowds and standing in line for what seemed like an eternity in the chilly wind we gave up and headed back to take the car somewhere else.

Thankfully we didn't give up on The Spot entirely.  Because it was hands down the best food on the island.  Connor loved their Frickles (fried pickles).  Kevin and I split the March special - the St. Patty Burger - swiss, mushrooms, onions, jalapenos, thousand island dressing ??, on texas toast - and a Shrimp Po Boy with fries and onion rings.  I practically licked my plate clean they were so delicious.  The fried shrimp were super flavorful and the jalapenos, and dressing made the burger.  So much so that we had to go back one last time before we left.  We also made a special run by Tortuga for a plate full of Sopapillas.  :)

One morning the boys came down to the beach to discover this giant hole.  Ryan claims someone dug his moat around his castle even deeper.  Yeah... About 3 feet deeper.  I joked someone was planning to bury a body.  Then hit the water table and gave up as the boys discvered it was only a few inches deeper.  Or was planning to roast a pig.  A very large pig.  Or searching for buried treasure.

Regardless the boys had all kinds of adventures in over the next day or two.  Ryan even created some slides to get down into it and stairs to help get out.

While I had a short list of other things we could have done - visited the Moody Gardens aquarium, or rain forest pyramid, gone to Seawolff park to see the ships, etc. we spent most of the time playing on the beach, making sand castles, digging in the sand, flying kites, and looking for shells, or playing in the pool or hot tub.

I was even lucky enough to sleep in a couple of mornings, and spent part of one afternoon lesiurely reading by myself in the room.  I managed to polish off almost the entire Divergent, Insurgent, and Aligent trilogy during our trip.  I started to just pick up Divergent as I wasn't sure I would want to read all three.  Thankfully I picked up the collection all at once as I practically finished Divergent the first night and couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Happy Halloween!

Criminals beware - Ironman, and Iron Spiderman may be on the prowl in a neighborhood near you! :)

And More Halloween Treats for School

Because I am a glutton for punishment... And had more gloves than I needed. And couldn't find Scooby Doo coloring books. And didn't want to take back the 40 Scooby Doo cups I found first. And I finally found the cute Scooby Doo Activity books. And I love Scooby Doo. And we already had all the stuff... and I wanted to get.rid.of.it. And everyone needs to eat a popcorn ball once in their life. And, and, and... I am just me. :)

I made treats for the boys' afterschool program's Halloween party, too.

Lucky, lucky, boys. :)

P.S. Those popcorn balls are messy, but *delicious*. Found them at Walmart. They started out as soccer treats. We won't even go into what happened there... )

Halloween Treats for School

And speaking of being proud of your creation... I was pretty estatic with how my Halloween school treats turned out this past week as well. :)

Decorating Pumpkins

Connor's class decorated pumpkins at school earlier this week. He was quite proud of his creation. :)

Meet the Teacher Gifts

Let me just say upfront that I am well aware that I might have gone a teensy bit overboard in my enthusiasm for "Meet the Teacher" gifts.

I procrastinated even thinking about them for weeks, then on Tuesday night around midnight as I was fuming about something or other work related well aware that there was no way I was going to be able to sleep I sat down and started brainstorming ideas. In the span of about 30 minutes I had come up with 4 spectacular ideas, and had drafts already well underway in Photoshop. And I cannot tell you how excited I am about how they turned out!

The first put to good use a couple of extra succulents and pots I picked up at Ikea last weekend. On a side note - I can't say enough good things about these plants. They take my abuse and are really just about the only house plants I haven't managed to kill over the years even as I regularly in turns forget to water them, then overwater them for weeks at a time. Despite all that not only have they survived, they have outright THRIVED.

So I threw together a quick printable, glued it around a skewer, tied on a bow, et VOILA! Done!

And you have to forgive me for my tangent here, but I am *IN LOVE* with the new glue sticks. The boys needed 4 and of course they come in a 3 pack each so I ended up with 2 extras for my craftin' stash. I pulled one out to glue on the flags and just about died when I opened it and discovered it was PURPLE! It actually goes on purple SO YOU CAN SEE WHERE YOU HAVE GLUED!! Then dries clear. OMG. Gluing will never be the same again. The boys can just keep their grubby little mitts off. I am so not sharing. :)

Though I will share a little tip I learned about keeping those ribbons in place on pots or anything else angled and slippery - put a tiny little piece of double sided tape up under the ribbon in the back and you don't have to worry about it slipping down or off.

And, yes, in theory, I should have been done with teacher gifts. But I just couldn't help myself. These little guys had already taken on a life of their own. And I knew I had to finish them.

I found the alligator clips at Dollar Tree the other day. Thought they were super cute so I picked up a set. Luckily when I realized that they would make a cute teacher gift and headed back to the store they still had plenty. So I picked up an extra set, or 3. :) I even turned a couple into magnets for our fridge using some leftover neomydium magnets.

And they really couldn't have been easier to make. Clips + snack bag, cardstock, a topper, and done. Designed and printed my topper. Cut it out, and then used the left over scraps to cut a little piece of cardstock to clip the clips onto(6" x ~1"). Took a scalloped punch and made a "bite" into the cardstock. Then clipped the 3 clips on and slid them into a snack bag. Zipped it up, then stapled my topper on. And done. :)

I showed both of the presents to the boys to let them pick which ones they wanted to take, and of course, they want to take both. As they are already done, why not? I am sure the teacher will love them both. And if I let the boys carry the clips I don't have to worry about them dropping and breaking the pots. :)

Mom: Hello
Me: That's brilliant! I am so totally using that. Kinder-garden. Why didn't I think of that?

For the record I think it was also my 4th call of the day. :)

Call 1:
Mom: Hello
Me: "Shhh! {stage whisper} It's me again Margret!
Mom: {stage whisper} Are you sneaking out?
Me: All I can say is the nurse better be at school so I can drop off these shot records. Because if my kids can't go to school on the first day I am homeschooling.

Call 2:
Mom: Hello
Me: The nurse was gone and the school was locked. I gave the records to a random stranger who happened to walk by. I am taking my bike rack back to the shop. They installed it upside down.
Mom: The new one?

Call 3:
Mom: Hello
Me: Turns out it wasn't upside down, they just installed the parts in the wrong places.
Me: On the bright side they could fix it today.
Me: On the down side - they broke another piece.

Life around here is never, ever, dull. :)
